Appendicectomy

What is an appendix?
Appendix is an organ, average 4 inches long and it's located in a junction between the small bowel and colon (large bowel). Some researchers and physician believe that appendix may has a functions in immune response. Others feel that the appendix is a vestigial organ, a remainder from the time when humans regularly dined on tree bark and needed an additional organ to break down the roughage.

What is appendicitis?
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. (the appendix got infected).
The treatment of appendicitis is appendicectomy...ie removal of the appendix.

Appendicectomy is a safe and common surgical procedure. The surgery has minimal risk especially in non-perforation appendicitis..

Now..lets have a look at this surgery..

Getting ready

Patient on the OT table. The anaes (bius) will intubating the patient.

Writing the patient name on the board.

Getting started..the nurse.

The equipment.

Before operation.

Cleaning the operation area.

Draping: covering the operation area.

Draping completed..this is a sterile area.

Marking the incision ..this is LANZ incision.

The procedure.

Cutting the skin.

Exposing the subcutaneous tissue, aponeurosis

Exposing the muscles..will be doing the standard muscle splitting technique.

The inflamed appendix

Ligation of appendicular artery.

Fixation at the base of the appendix..then appendix will be cut.

Closing.
Closing the abdominal wall, layer by layer.

Skin suturing (stitching)...
