ICORM2 day1
Yup..today is the day 1 of this meeting. The meeting was held at the Dewan Kuliah Utama at University Malaysia Sabah, UMS. I was at the meeting since 7.15am. I was among the early bird who registered for this meeting.
After registration, i was given a nice conference bag. Inside the bag were the conference book, pen, pencil, note pad and empty "botol air". This "botol air" can be use to refill water for drinking. It's really environmental friendly as it can be reuse and recycle!!.
The conference started at 8.30am by listening to plenary lecture from Prof Dr Victor Akpan Inem. He is a Nigerian and he delivered a lecture about "Health Security in Rural Areas". He did explained about rural health in his country. A life expectancy in Nigeria was only 50, as compared to our country over 70 year old. If i'm staying in his country, i have another 20 years left to live.
Following that, it was the opening ceremony. This meeting was officiated by our deputy health minister, Datuk Rosnah. She is in pink today, and she delivered a short but comprehensive officiating speech. The meeting was officially opened after Datuk Rosnah hit the gong three times.
Then, we had a short breakfast.
At 11am, it was the first interactive poster presentation. The unique about this meeting was, despite only a poster, we must do some sort of presentation to explain about our research projects. There will be 25 posters going to be presented. The poster presenters were arranged in 5 groups. Hence, there will be 5 interactive poster presentations, in a different time, day and place.
I was in the group no 1..which was held today.
The session was conducted in a small hall, just beside the cafe. The first 30mins was given to the audience to go through the five posters. We were only given 10 mins to present our findings.
Our chairman for today interactive poster presentattion was Dr Fredie.
The first poster presented was from Ms Wong Sok Yee, a research officer from University Darul Iman, Terengganu (I don't know this university existed!!). Her research project was about "Prevalence of Anxiety and Depression Among Rural Residents in East Coast Peninsular Malaysia. "
The second presenter was Dr James Bond Malaya!! from Sandakan. Before the presentation started, Dr Fredie introduced me to the audience. It was just usual introduction like introducing my name, place of working, any previous achievement etc etc etc. He told the audience that i've already working in Sabah for more than 5 years!!!!.
My presentation was "okay"..I'm able to explain in detail what the purpose of the research project and suggested ways to improve patient care in managing hernia.
The Q and A session followed after the presentation. The audience asked why patients in Sandakan keep the hernia till it was obstructed. I told them, the hernia was painless before, and some patients keep the hernia over 20 years. They seek treatment when the hernia obstructed, which now they are having severe pain. When the hernia become obstructed, it very difficult to do the surgery and risky..So..we needs to educate this people to seek treatment early.
I'm able to answer all the questions asked except for this one..
The audience: DrBond....why your poster got National Geographic logo???
Me: Ohh..i took the photo from the national geographic website. ,It is a photo of Mount Kinabalu.I'm a fan of national geographic society. I like the photo very much,,,..that's why i put it as my poster background.
The audience: Oh i see.. i thought you were sponsored by national geographic society.
Me: No la..
The audience: Have you climbed Mount Kinabalu????
Me: not yet la...may be next year..
Then the audience laughed at me...Ha ha ha
The presentation was fun and no stress at all...the 5 presenters presented their project well. It was really unformal and it's like we know each other very well.
Maybe because, it was not a competition,,but an education where knowledge is shared.
Okay...i have presented my poster..Now can lepak and watch movie!!!!!.
(Nota kaki: selalunya poster presentation tak de competition/hadiah...cuma yang penting ilmu dan kajian-kajian dapat dibentangkan dan dibincangkan..)
